Well, here we were: middle of the afternoon, all the one-on-one teaching done for the day and I'm working on something (probably laundry!) and down comes my daughter with a question about her independent school work.
Now, I know that she has been working on some geography and reading...and she comes up to me asking in all seriousness:
DD: Mom, which state is on a horse?
Me: Excuse me?
DD: Which state is on a horse?
We repeat this a couple of times... each time I ask her to explain her question a little bit but she seems perplexed at my inability to get the simple question she is asking and simply keeps asking the same question: Which state is on a horse?
Now, I find myself thinking: What? Has she lost her mind? Is she asking about state seals? State flags? Is she think of ranch brands? What is she reading again? What is she struggling with? Do I need to have my hearing checked? Have I lost my mind? Why am I not getting this??!!!
DD: (now giggling) Which state is on a horse?
Me: (realizing that I've been had -- I do what all smart moms do at this point -- I give up) I don't know...
DD: Maine!!!!
Ahh....HOMOPHONES!!! I get it now!!!
I make a mental note to thank Marie and her All About Homophones book for this moment in my day.
Gotta love it when they are learning!
