Where did you find your magnet board?

Just got back from Wally-World, and they had one for $14.96. So, I'll get dh's approval of a spot before buying it, but I think it should work! Thanks everyone for your input!

I'll check locally. They didn't show anything online that I thought was affordable or useful. Odd things like magnetic headboards???? I planned on going there today, but had a kink thrown in my day.…

Hmm...I looked on their website, but didn't find anything I thought would work. I'll look again.

Any suggestions for storing your level 2 student materials. I separated my cards to put them in a recipe box/index card box. They didn't fit! I need something a hair bigger. I looked at Staples, but found either the exact same size or gigantic boxes…

Have you considered magnetic paint? Then you just need a smooth piece of material... something like the coroplast can work for it, or a large picture frame with an strong insert. There are lots of creative options. If you have a school room, you cou…

We got ours at Walmart for around $15 or $16. It was made by "the Board Dudes" & is 2' X 3'. Sometimes I find things at the stores that the bigger companies don't have on their websites, not sure why. Merry :-)

In the past I have seen a lot of people post that they get them from Walmart. I just live in the city and the closest one is an hour drive one way. Heather

Well, I'd love to hear what you decide and how it works out for you. I know for my kids that sometimes starting with something that is review/a little easy builds confidence--that can be helpful too!

You know what you could do, since you'll get Level 1 anyway for your youngest, is just do a quick review of it. You wouldn't have to make him spell all the words--just make sure he knows the concept and can demonstrate it on a few words, and then move on. Some people get through a review of Level 1 in a month or less if their kids don't need to do all of the words.

Probably the biggest things he would get from level 1 would be a review of how to segment words (very important for future spelling success); and the additional sounds for some of the letters (he probably knows long & short sounds, but for example, O has 4 sounds, CH has 3, Y has 4, S has 2--he might not know some of the additional sounds that would be taught in Level 1 but he could pick them up pretty easily it sounds like). Then there might be a few rules to learn (he might know how to spell glass, but does he know it's a pattern to double F, L, and S at the end of a one syllable word with a single vowel? or that C is soft after E, I, and Y, or when to use C vs. K?) Some kids know those, others might know the words but not know there is a rule. See what you think--here's an article on choosing level 1 vs. level 2: http://www.all-about-spelling.com/which-spelling-level.html Merry :-)

Hi Sherry, how old are your kids? Have you read the articles in the FAQ section on Book Levels and Student Placement? http://www.all-about-spelling.com/spellingprogramfaq.html#student-placement

Here is a list of when various phonograms are covered:
Level 1 covers #1-32: the alphabet plus th, sh, ch, ck, ng, and nk
Level 2 covers#33-43: wh, ee, er, ar, or (as in corn), ou, oy, oi, aw, au, and ow.
Level 3 covers #44-53: ay, ai, ur, oa, oo, ea, ed, igh, ir, ey
Level 4 covers #54-65: tch, dge, ew, ei, wr, kn, or (as in work),eigh, ear, ph, ti, oe
Level 5 covers #66-72: si, ie, ough, ui, gn, our, ci

Also, Level 2 of AAS works a lot on learning the syllable types, when they are used and how they affect spelling. This information is foundational to learning to spell longer words. 3 syllable types are introduced in Level 2, and then more in Level 3. For this reason, AAS generally doesn't recommend starting higher than level 2.

I do have a longer compiled list of the scope & sequence for levels 1-4 that I can send you if you'd like to see it. You can link to these from each product page online too. HTH some! Merry :-)
