Thanks for stopping by my page!

I work for the "help desk" at All About Spelling. If I can answer a question or help in any way, please let me know!

We had tried several spelling programs (including making up my own, a very involved task!). Nothing seemed to be working. Then last Spring I stumbled across All About Spelling; it was everything I had wanted to create on my own and more.

Almost a year later, my kids still enjoy this, and their writing has improved so much. They can spell more words and if they do make a mistake, usually the mistake makes phonetic sense--no more simply "decorating with vowels" or adding extra letters because the word might need more!

AAS has helped with word-attack skills for bigger words, as well as helping with their reading speed. They have a lot more confidence now and both have told me that reading is more fun too.

I'm so grateful that we found AAS, and I enjoy helping others experience the growth and improvement we have.

Help with Writing!

How can we get these new spelling skills to translate into our kids' writing? I hear this question a lot. For some kids, it's hard enough to translate thoughts into the written word on paper. Add to that the need to think about spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, neatness, how to form their letters, organization, clarity, creativity...well, something has to give! What's a mom to do? Enter the COPS.

Getting Organized!

Recently I decided to tweak how my supplies are organized, so I thought I'd post some pictures!

This is my "everything box"--everything we need except our magnetic whiteboard is in here. On top are the file boxes for each child, here's a close-up:

Right-Left Brain and the power of movement

Our lesson today started out as a normal spelling lesson--we spelled a few review words and went over some of the mastered rule cards--all was going well with my 12 yo son. Then I opened the book and picked up where we left off--the 2nd dictation sentence. Usually he enjoys the dictations. Today he started rubbing his eyes and saying that they were tired. He tried to write the first sentence and couldn't remember how to spell "while." I encouraged him to leave it and finish, then come back to it… Continue

Need to save a couple hundred $?

On Mother's Day, Dave informed our dear little cherubs that their mother is priceless...and that they'd be getting the bill soon, LOL!

The kids tried to guess how much it would be & one of them said, "1.1 million dollars?" I said that sounded pretty good (Dave said it wasn'… Continue

My daughter made me cry today...

She & dh went out to get me a rose, and she sang a song she made up:

There is no one richer than me, richer than me, richer than me. There is no one richer than me, because I have a mom who reads to me.

There is no one richer than me, richer than me, richer than me. There is no one richer than me, because I have a mom who teaches me.

There is no one richer than me, richer than me, richer than me. There is no one richer than me, because I have a mom who loves me.

Thanks for the Welcome, I am really impressed with this system. I have 2 with learning challenges, 4 without. Looking forward to watching them improve. And the other ones will have so much fun learning this way, I was just trying to figure out how to teach the rules in a way they could understand when I found this system. It was a perfect match.

Hi Julie! All About Reading will follow the same sequence as All About Spelling (so the first book out will follow AAS Level 1). The word topics/sequence of AAS Level 1 will be followed, but the word lists will be expanded. It will include decoding…

Glad that helped! It's all so time consuming, I know. My 13 yo is in vision therapy, both of my kids need lots of one on one in various subjects--my hat is off to you teaching all of your children!! My 11 yo has struggled with auditory processing,…

VT is Video Text: http://www.videotext.com/homeschool.htm Yep, given my girls are so visually oriented I had to admit that they might actually learn better from it too. The little bitty text in most the books I bought is not appealing, that is for…

What is VT? I just found out that my library has Life of Fred so I've put the 1st 2 books on hold so I will be able to check them out before I buy! You might want to check your library. I'm not sure LOF will work for my daughter with dyslexia unle…

Beth, I actually still haven't bought it. It is still on my list of things I would love to see in hand, but it has slipped a little. Only because after my oldest dd, all the rest have reading issues that, well they aren't that bad, but LOF just se…

Hey Heather, just wondering what you think about Life of Fred at this point. I just came across it and think it might be a good fit for my son who is a good reader and loves silliness. He is good at math but gets bored with all the repetition in Mat…

Those are great tips. Something I have done with the kids I tutor to help them remember when "c" or "g" is supposed to be soft is to teach them "e, i, e, i, y" set to the Old McDonald tune. It has worked like a charm! I hope a lot more of you will s…

Ann Haker added a discussion to the group All About Spelling - Level 2
I've been using All About Spelling with our 7-year-old boy for about two and a half months now. Here are some of the tips I've picked up:1) If you use a magnet board on a nice table, go to an office store and by a big piece of foam core (that's the…
