Thanks for stopping by my page!

I work for the "help desk" at All About Spelling. If I can answer a question or help in any way, please let me know!

We had tried several spelling programs (including making up my own, a very involved task!). Nothing seemed to be working. Then in the Spring of '08 I stumbled across All About Spelling; it was everything I had wanted to create on my own and more.

Over 2 years later, my kids still enjoy this, and their writing has improved so much. They can spell more words and if they do make a mistake, usually the mistake makes phonetic sense--no more simply "decorating with vowels" or adding extra letters because the word might need more!

AAS has helped with word-attack skills for bigger words, as well as helping with their reading speed. They have a lot more confidence now and both have told me that reading is more fun too.

I'm so grateful that we found AAS, and I enjoy helping others experience the growth and improvement we have.

Back to School!

Well, we started back to school yesterday. We are not quite "year-round schoolers," but I find it's easier on us to start early and be able to take off time throughout the year when we need it. Plus I find that with a shorter summer break (6 weeks instead of 10 or more), the kids don't forget as much. This will be our 9th year homeschooling. (Wow! Hard to believe!)

I like to start back with just a few subjects and ease into things--so far we are doing:

Help with Writing!

How can we get these new spelling skills to translate into our kids' writing? I hear this question a lot. For some kids, it's hard enough to translate thoughts into the written word on paper. Add to that the need to think about spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, neatness, how to form their letters, organization, clarity, creativity...well, something has to give! What's a mom to do? Enter the COPS.

Right-Left Brain and the power of movement

Our lesson today started out as a normal spelling lesson--we spelled a few review words and went over some of the mastered rule cards--all was going well with my 12 yo son. Then I opened the book and picked up where we left off--the 2nd dictation sentence. Usually he enjoys the dictations. Today he started rubbing his eyes and saying that they were tired. He tried to write the first sentence and couldn't remember how to spell "while." I encouraged him to leave it and finish, then come back to it… Continue

Need to save a couple hundred $?

On Mother's Day, Dave informed our dear little cherubs that their mother is priceless...and that they'd be getting the bill soon, LOL!

The kids tried to guess how much it would be & one of them said, "1.1 million dollars?" I said that sounded pretty good (Dave said it wasn'… Continue

Thanks, Merry! :)

I was really wondering something. I am really struggling to figure out what reading program to use for my son who is in K this year. AAS is so much like Spell to Write and Read (which is what I used for my daughter who is 8 yrs old). From my experience with that curriculum I think I need to use a reading curriculum alongside AAS this time. My daughter struggled with just using the spelling rules/phonics for reading. Can you suggest a reading program that would work well with AAS? If not, that's okay. I am just hoping to find something.

Blessings!
Sandy

How apt to send a South African a Meerkat. Thanks for the welcome. I just finished school for this term and am taking 3 weeks holiday before we tackle the last 6 months, so I'm going to be coming here then to have a closer look. Blessings, Brigitte

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
