New With Questions

Ok....here is another questions...lol I'm in FL, so grammar is started in 1st grade. I was thinking that this time next year we will be gearing up for grammar. In my mind today, I've thought that we…

Thanks Heather and Merry....this does help. I think I will try both. Right now we cover 1 lesson in ETC in about 6 days (broken up over 2 weeks) which is not a lot IMO....so I think adding in AAS wil…

I've been reading past threads and I'm a little confused about a couple of things. First, a little back ground. My dd is 4.5 (will turn 5 this summer) and is reading. She has been asking to spell wor…

New to AAS...

Thanks Heather.....I figure we would give it a try and if it doesn't fly, then I'll put it up for a little while longer.

Thank you Deb!!! My dd has been working on sight words with a "cute" sight word worm chart!!lol But I will be glad to see it go....I really think she has gotten bored with "rote" learning of her sight words. Thank you again...:) Julie

Hi Julie - I emailed All About Spelling with this exact same question when I first started. Here is the reply I got: Yes, All About Spelling does teach sight words. However, the program does not teach unnecessary sight words. For example, some ear…

This has probably been asked before, but couldn't find in past threads. I read in the FAQ's that high frequency/sight words are covered in AAS, Does this mean that I can finally get rid of the sight word chart??? :) ~Julie

Hi Deb, We are using ETC and are about to start AAS Level 1. We just finished ETC Book 1 and are about to start book 2, along with AAS and volume 2 of the Bob Books. My daughter is a natural reader and ETC has been enough for her. We worked through…

Thanks Merry! Yes this does help. I "get it" now!! LOL Instead of segmenting, etc on paper it's done with token then tiles. I was hung up on the actual marking on paper, if that makes sense!! lol Thanks again!

Oh, I see what you mean. I was thinking encoding (sound to symbol) as the opposite of decoding (symbol to sound). In AAS they do segmenting exercises, starting with one token for one sound, and then moving to the tiles--one tile per sound. Various s…

Hi Linda Rose....yes that's what I meant by encoding..:) I should of mentioned the mark above and below in my question. I wasn't sure if it really "did" anything, especially for children that grasp the spelling concepts quickly. Thanks again!!
March 14
I'm assuming you mean that encoding is where the child makes marks above or below each or some of the sounds in the words. I taught in a first grade classroom where the children had to do that. The only thing that I can think that it helped the chil…

Hm, maybe I'm misunderstanding your question, but take another look. Step 4 of level 1 has kids hearing the sounds of a sound card, and then writing those sounds. Step 6 (and on throughout the series) has students spell on paper after they have spel…

I've looked at different spelling curriculums and have purchased AAS Level 1. After looking at AAS and several different spelling curriculums, I've noticed that AAS does not have the student actually encode the words on paper (if that makes sense).…

I hold off as well. But you can teach some of this informally. Things like sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period. How to read something when we come to a comma. You can teach nouns & verbs if you want too, those are simple term…

I personally hold off and start grammar in 2nd grade. Even then I use FLL, and lighten it up by not following all the scripts. We cover the big idea pieces and move on. Heather

It really depends on your preference. AAS is a complete phonics program, so it will cover all your bases. As Heather pointed out, it's scripted and paced for spelling, so you may find yourself wanting to move ahead with the reading instruction for y…

They do cover the same sort of material, but with different purposes. ETC is focused on reading skills, while AAS on spelling. My kids do both. Heather

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
