I'm a wife, mother and freelance writer. God has blessed me with six children of varying strengths and weaknesses, and I spend my days enjoying the journey of home educating them--and myself! While I followed the traditional path of schooling from kindergarten through university, I still find that there are more than a few gaps in what I was taught. I revel in the opportunity to follow my interests--and the interests of my children--as we follow the eclectic curriculum I've pulled together.

My children are Babita (13), Mary (age 12), Max (age 9), JW (age 7), Finns (age 3), and John (1 year). Our homeschool journey has been enriched by vision difficulties, sensory processing disorders, giftedness, adoption, passionate interests and more. We use a variety of resources in our homeschool. This year, we're concentrating on Ancient History, using resources from Sonlight and Veritas Press. I pull together my own Language Arts curriculum for each child. Other items you'll find in our rotation: Singapore math (JW), Math Mammoth 4th grade (Max) and Teaching Textbooks (Mary), Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy, lots of games and read-alouds, Memoria Press Latin and Introductory Logic and, of course ... ALL ABOUT SPELLING.

Feel free to leave me a comment and get to know me!

Hands-on homeschooling for the craft-impaired

JW, Max, and Mary press wet papyrus as part of a project focusing on papermaking in Egypt.

I admit it: Our homeschool is not what you might call "crafty."

To some of my friends, this is the ultimate irony. After all, my favorite off duty pastimes are of the crafty variety… Continue

Reading logs ... what's the point?

Mary, involved in her favorite activity.

The loss was almost physically painful.

For four years I had faithfully taken down the name and author of each and every book read by my oldest three children. I noted Newbery Medal winners and the ilk. I indicated series. And… Continue

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Max examining a strand of dry papyrus during our study of ancient Egypt.

I don't usually follow the local school system calendar too closely. One of the best parts of homeschooling is the ability to set our own schedule, after all. But one tradition I doContinue

What a difference a schedule makes!

A section of our family's dry-erase daily schedule.

I have tried just about everything you can think of when it comes to scheduling. Books, programs, online resources ... the whole bit. For a while after lighting on a new idea, I invariably feel an overwhelming sense of "I can do this!" I slog throug… Continue

Heather, I too enjoyed reading your insights and struggle with the teacher/proud mother roles. My twins are doing 5th grade work. Writing is a concern of mine for both of them (but for different reasons, of course.) My question is about your recommendation of the Grammar with Giggles/Gotcha' series - sorry can not remember exact title. What grade level is this book geared towards? I am using the Editor in Chief and find it a bit dull, but it does challenge them. It would be nice to find a fresh resource for grammar and usage. We are using Winston Word Works, which is instructional, but rather plain worksheet exercises. So, if you would please elaborate on this new resource as to why you use it and at what age. THANKS!

I like #7 the best--I'm all for child-led craftiness! I taught my kids young how to clean up & put everything away so that they could have free access to the craft center! We occasionally do the special project, and they do add a fun spice, but we s…

I have kept a reading log of my kids books almost since the beginning. The only difference is mine is in digital format with the software I use to keep track of my kids school work. It is nice to look back and remember and gives good ideas for the n…

See, now why don't I just plan on doing this? I always do this by "default" sometime in the fall around this time, but planning on it makes so much sense, ha! Just the other day I rearranged my son's schedule. I moved math earlier and science later,…

Very good idea! I like the thought of looking over things at that point - before burn-out and guilt have taken over, but after the excitement of that "new toy" feeling as you put it has worn off. I might have to have a little parent teacher conferen…

Jenna: I noticed that you are located in Washington. If you ever make it to Seattle, try out the Seattle Art Museum. The first Thursday of the month is free. Heather: Here's another tip: many art museums have a "free" day once a month. Then you don…

Thanks for the food for thought. I think I've always naturally fallen into the "crafty mom" versus "artsy mom" role. But I would love to add actual art to our home learning as well. Now I have some tools to help me do that! Any suggestions for great…

Inspiring! I think we will schedule a museum visit! I just hope *I* know what I am looking at (we've been before and yes, I was intimidated a bit) I like Marie's idea of not trying to see the whole place in one shot also.

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
