Good idea--so do you just tell your son to say it twice before writing it? I should try this with my dd.
Not sure about the science post--I didn't see it on the forums when I tried a search just now, but maybe it was in one of the groups?
Merry :-)
I just wanted to add that I have been having my 9yo repeat the dictation sentences twice before he starts writing and he has been remembering them so much better. Good thing to try.
Also, was there a post on Chatterbee somewhere about science recen…
Thanks Merry, I know he is really struggling with the sounds of some of the letters and he has a really hard time spelling. I will read the older student post again THANKS!!!
Hi Robyn,
Have you seen this article on working with older students? That might have some ideas for you. (Maybe a cool Star Wars notebook to write words in, or something else he's interested in, even if it's not something you'd usually spend the ex…
Hi Everyone,
I have been using AAS with my 11 yr old, now I am using it with my 13 almost 14 yr old son. He has always had a hard time with Phonics and Spelling- he is a terrible speller. I made the decision over the summer to use AAS with him, any…
Thanks. I will review for him. This is my second year homeschooling. I have to relax and not freak out about slowing down. That's the beauty of homeschool. My kids can learn at their own pace. All the suggestions I have received are very helpful. I'…
That's a pretty long break, and maybe a lot of writing. I'd slow it down and spend more time on the review for him. It sounds like he may be struggling to remember to apply the rules (like the ck at the end of back--when he makes this mistake, I wou…
We started after our break by just reviewing words from level 1. The first week my 7yo dd's spelling was terrible. (I also got a full phonogram set and am having her learn all the phonograms before progressing to level 2 to help her with reading.) S…
Hey, Merry-
Yes, this is our first week back in school. We just got off of summer break. We started our break in mid May. He hasn't written since then.
For the most part he did pretty good with the dictations in Level 1. Some words were easier for…
Hi Cheryl,
A few questions for you:
Was this your first week back at school? Were you off for several weeks for a summer break? I'm wondering if he needs some review time before starting with Level 2?
How did he do with the dictation phrases in L…
I started my 6 yr old son on Level 2 this week. He seems to understand the the rules just fine, but when it came to the dictations he was completely lost. He is still learning write, so, as far as him writing the words too close together or flipping…
Yes, but don't let not having the magnets and board keep you from starting if you've been wanting to get going. The kitchen table worked fine for us for three solid months while I decided if I wanted to try the magnets - and gave the girls a bit of extra alphabetizing practice in the process (lol). :^)
Hi, Cheryl, and welcome to The ChatterBee and AAS! What beautiful children you have! How old is the one starting with AAS?
As for the magnet board, you might want to check out the discussion about that in the Level 1 group - there are over 30 comments on just your question. Pretty much everyone agrees that it's easier with the magnets, including me...even though I started out without them and thought it would be okay. It was okay, but the magnets make it so much easier. I got my board from amazon.com, but any magnetic white board would do...as long as it's big enough (people suggest a good size in that discussion, too, which I think is 2' x 3'...but don't quote me on that!).
I am new to AAS. I homeschool my kids. They are ages 8, 5, and 2. I heard good things about this program, so, I ordered it. The current spelling program I use for my eight year old seems to be too difficult. It introduces rules with nothing for my daughter to connect it with and as a result, she gets very frustrated. I just started homeschooling this school year (2008/2009). My oldest child went to public school for kinder and first grade. I think she wasn't taught sounds properly and that is why there is a challenge now. I just want to meet this challenge head on, conquer it, and move on. My motto is if you can read and write, you can do ANYTHING. Learning how to spell is just the beginning.
Just my thoughts...
I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you.
