Hi Sonlighters! I used Sonlight for one year and ablsolutely loved the reading material. I struggled with determining mastery for my kids ages (now 12 and soon to be 9) and a tangible sense of beginning and ending a section. (I'm very option-oriented anyway so I don't naturally set up beginnings and endings.) My daughter loved the assigned books and would race through them so that the language arts sections weren't really relevant when she got to them. I understand they've changed their L.A. and for the better. My questions are how do you have your children demonstrate their grasp of the material and what do you think of the grammar, writing in the L. A. as it is now?
Thanks!

Great question, here's a link on readiness: http://all-about-spelling.com/spelling-readiness . I just started a discussion for this too: http://www.thechatterbee.com/forum/topics/how-do-i-know-my-child-is If other questions come up we can keep them all together then! Merry :-)

Thanks Heather! I just saw your post...I guess we posted our last comments at the same time!
It is great to know that it can be used with a wide range of ages. I was trying to tell my 6 yo about it tonight. I said 'it will help you learn how to spell, so that you can do it on your own without always having to ask mommy' and she said 'i can spell 'mommy' already!' HA! Then I said 'can you spell 'bridge' and she surprised me by getting 'bridg'... she just forgot the 'e'. I'm going to really consider getting this. It sounds like fun.

Angela,

I bought AAS for my 7yo, but after using it I was so thrilled with the method and ease of use that I moved my 11yo and 9yo over to it. Yes the word are really easy for them, but they are learning the rules they will later apply to more difficult words.

Thanks Merry! I did find it, and it looks very appealing! I'm wondering, at what age could you start this? I'm assuming around K or grade 1?

Hi Angela--if you haven't found it already, the AAS website is linked at the top of this page under spelling. Or go to www.all-about-spelling.com

Hey, Angela--
I actually heard about AAS from the SL forum. I just did a search for AAS and found their website. I recently started using this program. I am teaching my 8 yr old and 6 yr old. My kids seem to like it and my daughter's spelling and confidence is already improving.

Everyone in our house does, but every once in awhile I do meet a kid who doesn't--always makes me do a double take! Also I knew a little girl who would only eat the frosting, LOL! Merry :-)

Denise, I forgot to add that the curriculum fair season will be starting soon. You can get the chance to be overwhelmed by all your choices! Actually, if you can narrow down your options first or take a buddy, it can be very helpful to see the mate…
