I understand the job, but what might be a way for me to help my struggling speller know when to USE that job? It's one thing to read the word and say "oh yeah that E doesn't fit in with any of the other 4 jobs, so it has to be job #5," but it's another to know to add that E onto the end of a word. The first 4 jobs didn't really have that problem.

Or is this a case of the child having to basically memorize those words? (nurse, are, etc.)

Luckily, most Silent E's fall into one of the first four jobs. But like you pointed out, there are common words that do not fall into the first four jobs, so the "Handyman E" category is there as a catch-all.

Without the silent e, the word "nurse" would look like a plural word ("nurs"), so that's why we add an e to the end of the word. That explanation might help some kids. But as far as the other words go, most of them just have to be learned. AAS only introduces one or two of these words at a time, so kids don't have to memorize too many at a time. Many of the words are very common and so kids can develop sight memory of those words. For example, they see the words "are" and "were" in books quite a bit. That helps, but these are words that you just have to practice and review to help them really sink in.

Makes sense! (Oh look! There's one now! LOL!)

My dd tried spelling nurse with a c, but HALLELUJAH she said, "Hm, that doesn't look right" and changed it. For this child that is HUGE! ;-)

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
