That is pretty much what we did...threw it in jail. It is easier for them to remember that and keep the syllable rules in tact.

Hi Karen--I think you're correct that O doesn't make the sound we expect it to make based on the syllable rules. I think the point of this lesson, though, was that O does make one of the regular sounds listed on the phonogram card--unlike one and once which add in a /w/ sound. Make sense? If it upsets your students, throw it in jail, LOL! I sometimes throw naughty words in there "just cuz!"

I have been working on Level Three, Step 11, and I have a question about the word "only". In the lesson it is teaching Rule Breakers, "one" and "once", then the word "only". In the lesson it says you tell the student that it follows the rule. According to the syllable rules we have taught so far, the word is divided between the "n" and the "l", which make it a closed syllable which would then dictate the "o" would be short. If it is divided between the "o" and the "n" what syllable rule is that? What am I missing?

Congrats to your son! Maybe you can use a cutter on the cards? Or do it while you watch a favorite Christmas movie!

I have three kids doing Level 2. My oldest dd is in 4th grade and is finishing the last step so I'll be starting Level 3 very soon. I still need to cut the cards. I was soooo hoping they would be perforated. Oh well.

My kids do them over several days.

That sounds like a good idea, we do the dictations over a few days.
Miranda Comment by Miranda on November 9, 2009 at 9:04pm
We do it differently for each child. One loves the dictation and does it fairly quickly and we do them all. We get through a step a session with that child. The younger one does 3 of each of the phrases and sentences. That child sometimes takes several sessions to get through a step, depending on the step, so perhaps we should do a couple of dictations a day?
Merry Comment by Merry on November 9, 2009 at 6:03pm
We do all of the dictation. I feel they are an important part of the program because they put it all together. It's one thing to spell words correctly from a list that follows a pattern, and another thing to spell words correctly in their natural context--I think it requires more thinking and processing. Also, the dictations continue to review words previously learned. That said, if I had a natural speller or one who had no struggles in spelling, or one for whom this was all review, then I might not do them all. (For example, we reviewed the material from level 1 quickly just to fill in some gaps and didn't do those dictations). I think if/when you hit the point that it's new material or they need more reinforcement to make it stick that you'll want to do them. If you are seeing excellent retention, maybe it's not necessary for your kids.
HeatherH Comment by HeatherH on November 9, 2009 at 4:46pm
Not Merry, but chiming in. . . .

We don't do all the sentences, unless one of my girls (ages 9 and 11) REALLY don't get it. I pick one for the older and one for the younger, then we do Writing Station, then we move on. That's the key to homeschooling - do what your child needs. If they get it, you're all set - no need to do overkill. You have good instincts!
