The ChatterBee

This has been discussed some, but I'm interested in how different people are using the dictation exercises?

*Sentences/phrases ~I understand that we don't need to do both phrases & sentences, but for us it works well for further reinforcement.

*Frequency/Volume ~ How often & how much do you do?

*Timing ~ When in covering the AAS Step do you do dictation? Within the first part of the step? In the middle somewhere? At the end only?

The instructions are to do several per day. (Marie, of course I'd love your input!) I continue to refine what we do.

Right now, we do it into our 2nd/3rd/4th lessons of an AAS Step. (We do 15 min AAS daily - about 4 times per week, sometimes 5 times per week.)

We tend to do AAS 3 times a week for about 15 minutes a day. Usually we spend the first day reviewing cards and doing the concept review as well as doing one new concept. The next day we finish any new concepts introduced and then try it out on the spelling words along with a couple of dictation sentences. The third day I briefly restate the new rule we're learning and finish dictation sentences and/or phrases to make sure the new concept is solidified.

We pretty much do AAS everyday as Spelling is my dd's favorite subject. I usually try to dictate the words from the 'more words' lists for her to build with the tiles by the 1st or second day of the step. I have to produce a portfolio for our state so I use dictation in which she actually writes all the phrases and all the sentences for my weekly test. Sometimes we get through the Steps more quickly so we may have 2 "tests" in one week but that is how I use it.

Nicole ~ We too need to provide a portfolio. I've been going between just doing the word list for the "test" or using the dictation for the "test".

Sounds like a good plan!

I do all of the dictation (and all of the reinforcement words too). After I have taught the lesson and my kids have done the 10 main words, then I start doing dictation with them. If there are reinforcement words, I alternate--several words, a few phrases & sentences, several more words, etc...

I've debated whether I should spread the sentences out more but right now this seems to work for us.

Well I haven't gotten there yet (like that ever stops me), but I think my plan is going to be to do one dictation sentence a day, and probably cut the word list down to doing 5 words a day. Basically I will continue with the dictation from the previous lesson while continuing to move ahead.

We will see it it works out that way. ;)

That's an interesting application. Hmmmmmm . . . So the dictation would work as a review for your lesson. I guess if the child does not get a word correct, you can continue to review that particular word as you move forward.

Merry ~Woops! This post is in reply to your response. How did it get here?

This sounds like how we're currently doing the dictation. I'm now trying to do review at the beginning of each AAS 15 minute session. (Learning this from these forums.) Then we carry on from where we left of the time before. So, being that dictation is at the end of the Step, we cover that last. Right now that comes in about the 2nd,3rd session.

I think we'll use the dictation as practice, then use the word list for "the test". This then we'll put into dd's portfolio for our state.

As for how much time we spend, we go through the entire lesson and do the 10 words they need to know to pass the level. I only do the phrases or sentences if they aren't getting antsy. My 6 year old can get stressed out by spelling so I just take it one sentence at a time. It usually boils down to doing just 2 a time though.

Age does make quite a difference! I think I'd cut the time down too if my dd was younger.

With my 1st grader in Level 2, we do word list, 2 phrases and 2 sentences. Sometimes this all happens in one day, others take 2 days. We do AAS 3 times a week.

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
