The ChatterBee

We did our first day last week with AAS and I was wondering if this was "normal".  My daughter didn't want to stop and we ended up doing the first 5 steps.  She still didn't want to stop after that but I made her because I thought we were going too fast.

She didn't like the token thing and wanted to spell the words herself with the letter tiles instead of me doing it and having her fill in the vowel.  She spelled almost every word correctly.  In her play time she has been spelling words, even long ones on her chalkboard.

I'm just wondering if all this is normal?  I've been under the weather the past week, so we haven't done school.  When we start back up with Step 6, is it ok to do several lessons of Spelling if she keeps asking for more?

BTW, she is a 6yr old Kindergartner.

Hi Bev,

Sounds like your daughter is doing wonderfully! As long as she understands each concept, it's fine to move ahead at a faster pace. When she hits harder concepts, she may want to slow down. Maybe you can sometimes use it as an incentive to work on a subject that isn't a favorite (ie, "when you finish x, then we'll do spelling!).

For the segmenting lessons, your main goal is that she hear all of the sounds in the words, and understand that each phonogram stands for one sound. If she can say the sounds as she pulls down the tiles, then she's probably got it. This is a concept that comes into play no matter how long the word is, so if she stumbles on it later, you can revisit this topic at that point.

Most people spend 15-30 minutes on spelling, so if your lessons are about in that time frame, you are doing just fine. I liken this to when I read aloud to my kids--they almost always ask for another chapter, LOL! I usually do read an extra chapter (or two!), but then I like to leave them excited for the next day too--it's good to have something to look forward to, I think!

I saw your post about the cards & the tiny index card file box--that's what I had initially too. Sooo much easier to get the cards in and out with a larger box!

Congratulations to you and your daughter on a great first day :-). Merry :-)

Thanks for the reply Merry! I left Spelling for last today and she still didn't want to stop, although I had to make dinner so we only did one step this time - step 6. She got everything correct and we even did the writing test and the extra words practice at the end. It makes me feel good that its so thorough and we do the review of the cards because there are some sounds (like y making 4 sounds) she hasn't learned yet in OPGTR and she is learning those now in AAS.

About the index card box.....so thankful that you had posted yours! I plan on getting mine tomorrow at Walmart. ;-)

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
