The ChatterBee

I just got my Beehive Reader 1!

It's lovely. I am a firm believer in having resources that Mom likes as I make the best use of items I enjoy that are beneficial for my son. I love that there are not too many words on a page and that every page is nicely illustrated. The stories are nice too. I love the children in them -- they act like children and not jaded sophisticates or brats. The animals are cute without being overly anthropomorphized.

The book has a nice, solid feel and could easily be a present. I love that "This book belongs to ..." in the beginning instead of the more institutional little chart I often see in the few workbooks I use. The only thing I am not crazy about is the off-white color of the pages. I personally prefer a whiter page, and for one of my ASD kids it was extremely important to have white pages and black print.

Marie, I am impressed that you managed to produce a heavily illustrated book with a quality binding that is not a mass market item for a reasonable price. As little as I like to part with money, I have to admit that the price is reasonable -- especially right now!

Yay!

Me, too! This is really the most gorgeous reader I've ever seen!

What I like best:

- The word list is controlled. The words taught in AAS L1 are used.

- The sentences are natural. That's not easy to do with such limited word lists.

- As I've mentioned elsewhere, the phrasing (the line breaks) will be a great help to struggling readers.

- The faint line under the sentences will help kids who have a hard time tracking.

- The font is nice and simple, yet not childish.

- The drawings are beautiful. Lots of care was taken with the illustrations, and they will appeal to all ages, IMHO.

- The stories are interesting. I'm still deciding which is my favorite because I like them all!

- A child won't be able to "guess" the words by looking at the pictures. He/she will actually have to read the words, and then admire the pictures.

I can't wait to read this book with a child. (I'm a tutor, and that is my favorite part of being a tutor!).

Truly a delightful book. Thank you, Marie!

You are very observant! A lot of time was taken to work in these details that would help dyslexic and beginning readers. Minor things like the faint underline and font choice can make a big difference for struggling or new readers. Let us know how your students enjoy the stories!

I got my beehive reader today too. And the funny part is that I was going to say EXACTLY what you said! So instead of repeating it, I'll just second the motion! One extra thing that I like about the reader is that the stories actually make sense. In so many beginning readers, the stories are quite preposterous. These stories just make sense and the text is not overwhelming or like reading a text book at all--it's more like snuggling up with your favorite book and reading because you want to, not because you have to!

Today my 12 yo son picked it up and asked me if he could read it. Granted, he was waiting to use the computer--but he read the whole thing! About page 70 (he stopped to let me know what page he was on), he said, "This is really nice, parents are really going to like this for their kids. It's a good book to snuggle with. And it's a lot better than what I had to learn to read with!" His favorite story was the Ten Wishes.

And he would like me to submit his request that you continue to produce readers, and one for his level soon, please! (well, a kid can wish, right? I thought it was really sweet!).

Merry :-)

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
