The ChatterBee

I've been reading past threads and I'm a little confused about a couple of things. First, a little back ground. My dd is 4.5 (will turn 5 this summer) and is reading. She has been asking to spell words that are past the 3 letter words she already knows, so I thought about starting AAS *gently*. We have been using ETC and are about three-fourths of the way through book 1.

1. If I use AAS, do I need to use ETC?

2. If I use AAS, how many times a week should we work on AAS? I'm not looking to over load her.

After reading several older posts, I was under the impression that I would not need ETC if I use AAS. I'm assuming that AAS and ETC would be overkill????

Any advice directions would be appreciated!! :))

They do cover the same sort of material, but with different purposes. ETC is focused on reading skills, while AAS on spelling. My kids do both.

It really depends on your preference. AAS is a complete phonics program, so it will cover all your bases. As Heather pointed out, it's scripted and paced for spelling, so you may find yourself wanting to move ahead with the reading instruction for your daughter at a different pace. OTOH, if she's one who picks up reading naturally, she might do fine with using the phonogram CD-ROM that comes with AAS in order to learn the more advanced phonograms and using AAS for spelling.

You can always try using just AAS and see how it goes, and then decide if you want to add ETC back in. AAS lessons don't need to take long--10 or 15 minutes is probably plenty (less if she just wants to play with the tiles some days). You don't have to finish a step in one day, you can do part of a step and pick up where you left off the next day.

HTH some! Merry :-)

Thanks Heather and Merry....this does help. I think I will try both. Right now we cover 1 lesson in ETC in about 6 days (broken up over 2 weeks) which is not a lot IMO....so I think adding in AAS will be ok.

Ok....here is another questions...lol

I'm in FL, so grammar is started in 1st grade. I was thinking that this time next year we will be gearing up for grammar. In my mind today, I've thought that we may be doing ETC, AAS and a grammar program and to me this sounds like a lot....any suggestions?!?!?!?

I personally hold off and start grammar in 2nd grade. Even then I use FLL, and lighten it up by not following all the scripts. We cover the big idea pieces and move on.

I hold off as well. But you can teach some of this informally. Things like sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period. How to read something when we come to a comma. You can teach nouns & verbs if you want too, those are simple terms. We had a Jump Start computer game, and on either the first or second grade level they had some cute songs about parts of speech.

Also, I'll bet you've already taught some grammar by correcting your child's speech with the correct form of a noun or verb--if they say something is "gooder" we correct that etc... So much can be taught informally at this age. Just some thoughts!

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
