The ChatterBee

My family was going out to dinner with three adult friends, Jon, Linda, and Brian. Our destination was about twenty minutes away, and we were all talking about how our week had gone. The shipment of All About Homophones books had just arrived from the printer, so I mentioned how excited I was about this book.

Now, you have to understand that these three friends are about as far opposite of my family as you can get. Indeed, it must be funny to see us all in public together. My family is on the quieter side and very clean cut. Our friends are rowdy, no topic is off limits, and they enjoy making a scene. Jon is a liquor salesman who knows every little hole-in-the-wall joint in a 150-mile radius, and he has plenty of stories to prove it. Fun includes drag racing on ice or hauling a deer out of the woods. Not what you'd call a literary bunch. So when they asked what homophones were, I certainly didn't expect them to share my excitement.

Spontaneously, though, everyone in the van started coming up with pairs of homophones. It was an instant game. Each person racked their brain to come up with a great set of words. When we arrived in the parking lot at our destination, everyone groaned "oooh" because the game was over. Now, five of us were adults and two were teens! It just goes to show that homophones are universally fun.

Here are the basics of "The Homophone Car Game" in case you have time to play on your next road trip:

1. Each person comes up with a pair of homophones.
2. Play passes to the right.
3. Loud cheering is allowed when someone comes up with a particularly good pair that you never would have thought of.
4. If there are younger kids in the car, make it a rule to keep it G-rated. That's all I'm saying :)

Ha! Sounds like a fun bunch. I think this helps to prove that AAS can be for all ages! I think our little family may enjoy this one too.

Thank you.

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
