The ChatterBee

I thought it would be fun to share how we organize our books, cards, extras etc... (I'm always looking for better ideas!).

I started off using a file box for the review cards, but it was hard to get the cards out--the box wasn't enough bigger than the cards, and when a full level was in there, it got full. Now I'm using a plastic, expandable coupon holder that has built in file tabs and a larger compartment up front for tiles (I put the mastered cards for review up there).

I keep the extra tiles etc... in ziplock bags, and then the books, extras, card files etc... in a rubbermade tote.

I also like to use the progress chart and syllable chart as a bookmark for each child.

How about you?

My current cards are in a file box. My cards from Level 1 are on a shelf - just sitting there waiting to be lost. My tiles are in zipper bags. I have a bag for current tiles and a bag for to be used later tiles. The books are on the language arts shelf. The progress chart is hanging from the bulletin board.

Organization, my favorite topic!

- For my own copy of the cards, I store the cards in a box like this one: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/154823/Globe-Weis-Index-Card-.... It has a "follower" to prop up the cards when the box isn't full.

- When I was looking for a picture of the box I have, I saw this one: http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/555704/Snap-N-Store-Index-Car.... This looks like a good box for the price ($5.95). I can't tell from the photo if it contains a "follower" to hold the cards upright, but it probably doesn't.

- For my students, I use a regular 3x5" index card box. When the student moves to a new level, I remove the Word Cards that they have completely mastered to make room for the new cards.

- I keep the students' progress charts posted on the wall, with a basket of fun stickers nearby.

- Other material such as Word Banks, Completion Certificates, etc., are stored in a manila folder with the student's name on it.

When you use a regular 3x5" index card box, how do you keep the first divider from getting "beat up?" We are doing level 1 and we just started in January. My first divider looks pretty ragged. Do you typically laminate the dividers? At the current rate, we will have to buy new dividers! :)

Try putting some clear contact paper over it. A cheap alternative.

Good idea. I will do this. Thanks!

I actually did it (clear contact paper) once and they were still a bit ragged, so I had to put a second coat layer on them. Then I bought a bigger file, so they didn't get crushed when I close the lid. ;)

Well, new dividers come with each material packet, so that helps! When I was using a regular box, what I did was put all of the mastered cards in front without a divider.

So, you get new dividers with each level? Are they labeled with the same or different categories?

Yup, they come in each material pack & are labeled the same I believe (to tell the truth, I didn't cut them out when we moved up, LOL! I just reused the ones I had been using! The tabs require scissors & I was all about my new cutter when we moved up a level, ha-ha!).

I'm saving mine for when my original ones get ratty. I'm not sure what I'll do when we get through the program and have 3 sets of cards not cut out. LOL

My dd is still on Level 1, but we are making good progress, so I shall soon have to order Level 2. Then, I can have new cards. Yeah! I am so glad to hear that I automatically get new cards. I was getting bummed out about my ratty cards. I think it is the "accountant" in me. I like everything neat and orderly. :)

I laminated my dividers and I use a 3x5 card box that is roomier than most. It's by Sterilite and you can get it at walmart (although sometimes they don't have them).

http://www.housewaresandbeyond.com/p14051-Sterilite-1771-Micro-Flip...

at walmart they are $1.00 each

There is even room inside them for all the level 2 cards and since they are larger in width as well, they offer a small spot on the sides of the cards to put the small tags (syllable tags, vowel teams, etc...)

And they don't squish my dividers!!

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
