The ChatterBee

Hi! My name is Cheryl and I homeschool all my children. I have a 10 yo, 9 yo, and a 6 yo on the program. The older two just started Level 2 and are flying through it. The 6 yo is taking his time. He is just learning how to read so I'm going back through some lessons until I feel he gets it.

On to my toddler, She is a bright 3 year old (Oct 18), so obviously I won't be doing Level 1 with her till later, but I'm wondering about teaching her the sounds of the letters as AAS suggests. Why not nip it in the bud from the get go? I thought I would try it and see how she does with it. We will be starting with the vowels, for one vowel per week. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this with a toddler and how was your experience.

I haven't, but I was wondering if you saw the phonogram progress chart that you can download for free? It's in the Level 1 Group, just under the welcome message in the series of links there. Might add a fun element to this for your dd!

Oh thanks, I haven't explored the site that far until now! Now here is another question, should I just teach the vowels or go through the alphabet as is since she doesn't know the alphabet yet? I wanted to go through the alphabet daily and sing the alphabet song, so I think concentrating on the vowels as a letter per week wouldn't confuse her. Gosh, you would think after doing three boys from day 1, I would know what I'm doing. I just don't want her to struggle with spelling like the boys are, especially my little guy.

Thanks for your input.
Cheryl

If you look in the front of your Level 1 book, there is a section called "Familiarize yourself with the Basic Phonograms" around page 9 or 10. In there it talks about which letters should not be introduced together to minimize confusion. Other than that, I think I'd introduce both vowels and consonants as you go--the consonants are a bit easier, so they might be a nice break inbetween some of the vowels anyway. You could do a letter a week for 26 weeks and have a fun preschool curriculum, have her make letters out of playdough or color a letter, make a collage of things that begin with that same sound--things to cut & paste, have her play with the sounds etc...

I would like your suggestion to my daughter Suzanna Christy who is studying First standard in an English Medium School. She needs some motivation to read lessons on her own. What are the methods? Kindly suggest some methods. Thank you. MBJ Pancras
